  3. More than a few times in the past, users of my DirX program have contacted
  4. me asking about the availability of some of the compression utilities
  5. mentioned in DIRX.DOC, or alluded to in the sample DIRX.CFG files I've been
  6. including in my distribution archives for DirX (DRX???.ZIP).
  7.  
  8. Below I've incorporated, in database form, information on those utilities,
  9. plus a few more, which I've gleaned from various sources.  By no means do I
  10. make any warranty that the information is completely accurate, or
  11. up-to-date.  The authors of any of the below mentioned programs,
  12. especially, are welcome to contact me with more timely information.

  14. For each program listed below I indicate:

  16. 1) the main program filename
  17.  
  18. 2) the most recent version number of which I have personal knowledge, and,
  19.    as far as I could determine, either the program date, or the earliest
  20.    file date (not necessarily reliable)

  22. 3) whether or not it is intended to be used with .COM, .EXE and data files
  23.  
  24. 4) the author, or owner, of the program
  25.  
  26. 5) how the program is distributed:  public domain, freeware, shareware or
  27.    commercial.

  85. Calling this utility an executable file compressor may be doing it an
  86. injustice.  It may be loosely described as an archiver-type utility with
  87. the added capability of functioning as an executable file compressor.  The
  88. first version of DIET appeared to be a stripped-down version of LEXEM, with
  89. only the executable file compression features left in.

  121. This is PKLITE Professional.  The main *functional* difference between it
  122. and the shareware version seems to be the extra-compression option (-e
  123. switch), which produces "unextractable" compressed files.  Executable files
  124. created by PKLITE Professional can be used and distributed for commercial
  125. use.

  212. Although the purpose of this program is to uncompress files previously
  213. compressed by either version of LZEXE, in most cases you don't get an exact
  214. replica of the original .EXE file, just a functional equivalent.  If you
  215. choose to compress your executables with LZEXE, it may be prudent to back up
  216. the originals first.  (This is true for executable file compressors in
  217. general, but *especially* true for LZEXE.)

  227. This was a utility distributed with Version 0.91 of LZEXE, which was
  228. intended to be used to unpack files compressed with EXEPACK.
  229. Unfortunately, it didn't always recognize, and therefore didn't work with,
  230. all "EXEPACKed" files.  However, recently, a utility has been made
  231. available to patch UPACKEXE.EXE (see UPACKFIX.EXE).

  246. By the time you read this, it's conceivable that later versions of these
  247. programs will be made available.  If you attempt to search for any of these
  248. files on CompuServe, please be aware that the names of distribution
  249. archives which incorporate version numbers may change, if a later version
  250. is uploaded.  Thus, if a first attempt doesn't turn up the names I've shown
  251. above, you might try using the wildcard character '*' in place of the
  252. embedded version number.  Example:  If you can't find 'PKL113.EXE', you
  253. might search for the filespec 'PKL*'.  You could also search on an
  254. appropriately chosen KEYWORD - 'DIET' for DIET-related files, for example.
